Understanding Numerology – Interview with Katharina Geib on Life Paths & Self-Discovery

More and more people are engaging with numerology, life paths, and the question of whether numbers can help us to better understand ourselves. But what exactly lies behind this ancient symbol system – and why is it experiencing renewed attention today?

For MAXI magazine, Katharina Geib spoke about the meaning of life paths, self-discovery, and the role of numerology in a time when many people are seeking orientation and a deeper understanding of themselves.

In the interview, she explains how life paths are calculated, what insights numerology can provide, and why numbers are far more than just mathematics for many people.

MAXI: For many, numerology first sounds like a game from school – what's really behind it?

Katharina: I actually hear that a lot – many people first think of simple number games. Numerology, however, is originally a millennia-old system of symbols that understands numbers as archetypal energies. Similar to astrology, it works with specific qualities and patterns, only using numbers instead of planets. It's not about a number being "magical," but about the meaning and the psychological or energetic themes associated with it. For many, numerology is therefore primarily a tool for self-reflection.

MAXI: Why are we experiencing such a strong renewed interest in topics like numerology, life numbers, and self-interpretation right now?

Katharina: Because many people realize that traditional life models and external standards of success alone no longer provide guidance. We live in a time when many things have become faster, more uncertain, and more complex – as a result, the need to understand oneself better and develop an inner compass is growing. Numerology offers an approach that is both intuitive and structured, and that's precisely what appeals to many people at the moment, I think.

MAXI: The so-called life number is considered the core of numerology – what does it actually say about us?

Katharina: From a numerological perspective, the life number describes the fundamental energy with which we come into this life. You could say it shows which qualities particularly define us, which themes we repeatedly encounter, and where our central learning tasks lie. It doesn't explain our entire personality – but it often surprisingly accurately reflects the basic dynamic that drives someone. Many experience their life number as a kind of common thread throughout their lives.

MAXI: Can you briefly explain how to calculate your life number – and why the birth date is so crucial?

Katharina: The life number is calculated by adding all the digits of your birth date and reducing them until a single digit remains – with the exception of certain master numbers. For example, if you were born on August 14, 1992, you would calculate 1+4+0+8+1+9+9+2 = 34, then 3+4 = 7. The birth date is considered crucial because it marks the moment we enter life – and in many spiritual traditions, it is understood as a symbolic imprint of our fundamental energy.

MAXI: Many use numerology to better understand themselves – where does self-awareness end and projection begin?

Katharina: Numerology should never serve to pigeonhole oneself or relinquish responsibility. It is not a rigid identity label, but a tool for reflection. It becomes problematic when people start to explain every characteristic or every life decision solely through numbers. Good numerology opens up space for self-reflection – it should never replace thinking, but rather expand it.

MAXI: To what extent can the life number provide clues about personality, relationships, or life tasks?

Katharina: It can show which fundamental themes characterize someone: whether someone approaches life more as a freedom-loving, security-oriented, visionary, emotional, or analytical person. In relationships, it often helps to understand why certain dynamics repeatedly occur – for example, why someone needs closeness while another prioritizes independence. And in terms of life tasks, it can provide clues about which qualities a person needs to develop to come into their full power.

MAXI: Are there typical patterns you repeatedly observe with certain life numbers – especially regarding love and relationships?

Katharina: Yes, absolutely. People with a 2, for example, are often very relationship-oriented, harmony-seeking, and sensitive – but sometimes also conflict-averse. A 5 often needs freedom, development, and variety in relationships and quickly feels restricted. An 8 often brings strong themes around control, power, and trust. Of course, no person is just their number – but certain relationship patterns do appear remarkably frequently.

MAXI: Can numerology help in making decisions – or is it more about awareness than "predictions"?

Katharina: For me, it's clearly about awareness, not predictions. Numerology shouldn't tell anyone what they "must" do. But it can help to understand why certain decisions feel right or wrong. It creates awareness of one's own patterns, needs, and developmental themes – and precisely from this, better decisions often emerge. Not because the number decides, but because one sees oneself more clearly.

MAXI: Critics say numerology is not scientifically provable – how do you deal with this skepticism?

Katharina: Completely understandable. Numerology is not a scientifically proven diagnostic tool and should not be marketed as such. I see it more as a symbolic system – similar to how many people work with personality models, archetypes, or astrology. For many, the value lies not in empirical provability, but in whether it provides helpful impulses for self-reflection. Skepticism is healthy – it only becomes problematic if one rejects everything that is not scientifically measurable, even though it can subjectively have a benefit.

MAXI: Are there specific life phases or transitions where numerology can be particularly helpful – for example, during new beginnings or upheavals?

Katharina: Yes, especially in phases where people feel they need to reorient themselves: separations, career changes, existential crises, relocations, or generally transitions into new life chapters. Precisely then, many seek a greater understanding of what is happening in their lives. Numerology can help to view such phases not just as a crisis, but also as a developmental step.

MAXI: Many people are looking for guidance – can numerology help them to trust themselves more again, instead of seeking answers externally?

Katharina: That is precisely its greatest value for many. Good numerology doesn't dictate answers – it reflects back what is often already inherent in us. Many people experience through their life number for the first time that certain qualities or needs are not "wrong," but rather part of their nature. And this understanding can enormously help one to trust oneself more again.

MAXI: When people delve deeper into their life number – what is the moment that always surprises or touches you?

Katharina: When someone suddenly understands why certain themes have accompanied them their entire lives. This "Now so much makes sense" moment is often very emotional. Many not only recognize their strengths but also develop compassion for their own challenges.

MAXI: If our readers were to take away only one thing from numerology today: What would be your most important impulse?

Katharina: That self-knowledge does not mean pigeonholing yourself – but rather encountering yourself more consciously. Numerology can be a mirror, but not a judgment. If it helps you to understand yourself better, to approach your patterns with more compassion, and to go through life more consciously, then it has fulfilled its purpose.
